It's Always SOMETHING!
I know that being a mom is already a huge responsibility. As a full-time working mom, I feel even more stretched thin! But how to continue to do both while dealing with your OWN personal health issues?...I'm still trying to figure that all out.
February 11, 2021:
After a bad headache subsided late in the afternoon, I noticed that the vision in my left eye was funny. I seemed as if I could only see out of the Right side of my Left Eye. I called the Optometrist's office. the next day; they said they could get me in the following week. My symptoms didn't appear to be "emergent" to the receptionist. Unfortunately, over the weekend my vision in my left eye decreased until all I saw was a dark gray blur.
February 15,2021:
I immediately called the Optometrist's office again on Monday and was able to be seen that day. The optometrist found that my optic nerve was swollen and referred me to a Neuro-ophthalmologist.
February 18, 2021
The Neuro-ophthalmologist then diagnosed me with Optic Neuritis and recommended undergoing High-dose IV steroid treatments for 5 straight days. I started the treatments on 2/22/21 and by Friday (2/25)during the last treatment I was FINALLY saw noticeable improvement in my eyesight. The dark gray blur slowly disappeared and I was able to differentiate colors again.
So basically, I lost my eyesight for approximately 2 weeks! It was the most bizarre thing that has ever happened to me. And I'm still trying to regain my full vision, 2 months later...Right now, I'd say my vision has returned up to 90%. I can see out of my left eye, but everything is darker (as if I'm looking through sunglasses) and I still can't read very well looking out of only my left eye. The doctor said it could take up to a full year for me to fully regain my vision. He initially thought that I had MS-multiple sclerosis?!?! It's a scary potential diagnosis to hear. FORTUNATELY, I had a brain and spine MRI and both came back NEGATIVE for lesions (physical indicators of MS).
Overall, I was able to overcome this health setback while managing working and family. I'm pushing through my college course as well so that I can continue on my path toward medical school. I'm still not sure what caused my Optic Neuritis, but it happened and thankfully, I'm not completely blind. I credit that to God and my faith, because without it I NEVER could have gotten through this health crisis with my mental-well being intact.
Thanks for reading and I'll write another update soon. Hopefully when I can see MUCH better!
